Star Trek Renewals
Posted By:

Paramount have announced renewals for Star Trek's DiscoveryStrange New Worlds and Lower Decks.

Also premiere dates for Picard (March 3) and Strange New Worlds (May 5).

Lower Decks season 3 will premiere in Winter and Prodigy's previously revealed second half of season one will premiere later this year.

How should we interpret Strange New Worlds' pre-release renewal?

Certainly it's no guarantee of either entertainment quality or Trekness but arguably there is implied recognition of the fundamental errors made with Discovery and Picard in Strange New World's concept and also in all things Discovery having been classifed as ultra secret, i.e. never to be spoken of again, in the Star Trek universe.

That's as close as you can get to eradicating it from the franchise without a time travel reboot - which is a whole different can of worms they already opened with the recent films.

Though not an official Paramount production, the recent Star Trek documentary, The Center Seat, a 55 year history of Star Trek excludes the more recent series. Another layer of historical erasure.

When queried about those the documentary's director had this to say:

Space.com: Are you pleased with the direction of the newer "Star Trek: Discovery" series and animated shows, and if handed the keys to the franchise where would you take it?

Volk-Weiss: Here's my positive answer. I'm very pleased with "Star Trek: Lower Decks," and I'll leave it at that.

Were Paramount opposed to this documentary we would guess that they could have put word out to all of those Star Trek actors, writers etc and many or all would have made themselves unavailable for this.

So we're cautiously optimistic about Strange New Worlds.

The Center Seat has been licensed to Foxtel in Australia but we can find no sign of it here yet.
