The Callisto Protocol game director Glen Schofield isn't the only developer forced to backpedal this week in response to being behind the times.

Warner Bros. free-to-play online 2D fighter Multiversus had included an ability which allowed Velma - of Scooby Doo - to summon a police car to take away another player.

Their character roster includes real-world African American basketballer LeBron James.

And Garnet - a dark skinned alien character voiced by black British singer Estelle in animated series Steven Universe.

Awareness of racial discrimination and brutality committed by US police is possibly at an all time high, courtesy of every mobile phone being a video recorder.

Velma's ability remains but the vehicle has been reskinned to The Mystery Machine van - the Scooby Doo gang's signature vehicle.

Instead of calling the police, Velma now solves the mystery and calls the Mystery Inc. gang and the Mystery Machine to take the bad guys away.

Multiversus is available to play now on PC, Xbox and PlayStation.
