After Yang

After Yang, last year's winner of the Alfred P Sloan prize (science or technology theme) at the Sundance Film Festival, has been given a (US) cinema and streaming release date of March 4 on Showtime, and a trailer.

We can't find any sign of it coming to Australian cinemas yet or any word of it on streaming services, but Paramount+ is where we'd look first for Showtime content.

What about the film itself?

It has a fascinating premise.

In a world where robotic children are purchased as live-in babysitters, a father and daughter attempt to save the life of their robotic family member, Yang, who has become unresponsive.

Robotic child babysitters is an easy to believe premise and we're probably fast approaching that level of technology.

Android children could perform the safety / protection functions of a babysitter and also provide the socialisation benefits of a child companion.

But there is also the potential for parents to become attached to the android child, as appears to happen here.

Critic response has been very comfortably favourable.

Could be worth seeing.
