Black to Grey

A new trailer has been released for Deus which stars Australia's Claudia Black (a.k.a Vala in Stargate SG-1) as astrophysicist Karla Grey. Does that name sound made for her?

For the sake of managing expectations this isn't a huge budget cinema release. It's straight to DVD and digital.

Down to the details.

A mysterious black sphere is discovered in the orbit of Mars. The Achilles is sent to investigate. After the bedraggled six-person crew wake from eight months hibernation, the Sphere is transmitting a single word in every Earth language ever known - Deus.

Mysterious alien objects aren't new in sci-fi but can make for good stories.

Right off the bat though we noticed something now which we missed when looking at this earlier in the year.

Deus is Latin for god - that we recognised - but if the sphere is transmitting in every Earth language ever known, wouldn't we be reading that as "god" rather than "deus"?

Latin isn't even close to the first or oldest known language either.

Mmm.

Anyhow, moving past that, we'll level a critique at this trailer which sadly all too frequently applies - the dialog feels heavily recycled.

The special effects look quite decent though.

Might be at least mildly entertaining.

Deus will release direct to DVD and digital on September 13.
