Broken Roads

Ozzie games developer Drop Bear Bytes (what a name) have released a Gamescom trailer for their upcoming post apocalyptic isometric roleplaying game Broken Roads.

Which boasts a unique four dimensional (Utilitarian, Humanist, Nihilist, Machiavellian) morality system.

What's interesting and much more immersive about this system is that your previous choices limit future ones.

Available choices are limited to those within a certain range of your current alignment.

As the developers put it:

We believe this will enhance the game’s roleplaying realism - you can not take an evil option and then immediately follow up with the most noble option.

Decisions will not be clear cut good and bad – we want to present real moral dilemmas that players will have to carefully consider.

We are of two minds about this.

It is potentially unrealistic for roleplaying games to allow players to waltz into every conversation and situation with the full gamut of moral options.

In many cases your reputation would precede you.

If you slaughtered an entire town for kicks, folks in neighbouring towns would be wary of you.

On the other hand some of the most evil and terrifyingly successful people we've encountered are sugary sweet most of the time, but would throw any and everyone under the bus if they could get away with and benefit from it.

Machiavellians aren't all full-time moustache twirlers.

Some understand the benefit of maintaining a cover.

Still it looks like a fabulous game and Bethesda won't get around to making Fallout 5 until after Starfield and then Elder Scrolls 6.

So that's probably at least a decade away.

Plus here we have an Australian setting and a unique art style.

We dig it.

Are there zombies?

The trailer doesn't show any but the opening dialog accompanying a scene showing graves might hint at that:

They say what goes up, must come down.

No-one ever talks about things going the other way.

On the other hand, the rest of the dialog seems to be about picking one's self up after being knocked down.

So maybe not.

Can confirm kangaroos though.

Broken Roads doesn't have a precise release date but is scheduled to release next year on PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.

Be advised that while Steam and their own website presently lists their release date as 2022, their Gamecom announcement and trailer both say 2023.
