While Henry Cavill's public response to new DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran dumping him as Superman after his recent return to the role and leaving the title role in Netflix's The Witcher was cordial and open to being recast in the DC universe, he has now joined an Amazon series adaptation of Warhammer 40K.

Colour us not surprised.

Maybe Gunn and Safran's decision wasn't strategic, but you've got to wonder if DC execs didn't see an opportunity to shaft Netflix.

The Witcher is one of their big hitters and arguably superior to Warner Bros.' biggest hitter, Game of Thrones.

It is reported that he and Vertigo Entertainment secured the Warhammer 40K rights and delivered it to Amazon.

A process which took several months. How many isn't specified.

Meaning that Cavill and Vertigo hatched this plan either soon after or possibly before his leaving The Witcher, and well before DC dumping him.

Given how long it takes to develop a series, he could have finished a full seven'ish series run of The Witcher before coming to this one.

Cavill is well known as a Warhammer fan.

Whatever the particulars, Warhammer is one of the biggest and also grimmest names in gaming.

Ever since the dark Battlestar Galactica reboot we've seen attempts to go grim with established screen sci-fi franchises like Stargate and Star Trek, to ill effect.

Warhammer 40K is more suited to it.

Though not into Warhammer ourselves and having some reservations about the franchise, this one could be interesting.
