Creepy Disney

We finally got around to watching an episode of Disney's not-a-superhero comedy Extraordinary, and while it is better than some of its promos made it appear, it was unexpectedly morally questionable.

For our tastes there's too much sex, but we don't regard sex as amoral. The problem is their treatment of consent. Spoilers ahead.

Basic premise of the show for those unfamiliar with it - nearly everyone on Earth develops a superpower and the main character is one who hasn't.

In the first episode the main character is sexually frustrated and meets someone who possesses the uncontrollable power to make anyone instantly orgasm upon any direct skin contact.

Is he the answer to her horny prayers?

No, he's a bit sensitive about his powers - perhaps not entirely unreasonably - and prefers to get the job done without them.

He makes it perfectly clear that he doesn't want her to directly touch his body.

They have a go - with a gloved hand - but he fails utterly and she fakes an orgasm to make it end.

Having slept over, the following morning she awakes still frustrated with him asleep.

Yeah, you guessed it.

She reaches for him.

As it happens, a shapeshifter in the form of a cat - which we correctly guessed but which hadn't yet been revealed - which she had taken in thinking it a stray, woke orgasm boy with his paw before she reaches him.

Yes, his powers also work on animals.

No means no, doesn't it?

In the real world if you try to initiate sexual relations with someone who is asleep, that's widely and fairly regarded as not right unless there is a prior understanding that the sleeping partner is ok with it.

Though she hadn't reached for his genitals or anus which are what many regard as the good / naughty / sexy bits, his no had been loud and clear and her intent was to use his body to reach orgasm.

Without consent.

Passengers starring Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence was another recent sci-fi offering with an undeniably creepy tone.

Widely roasted as it deserved to be.

Extraordinary?

We cant find any sign of objection.

Much praise.

Disney is already working on season 2.

Since the cat was also actually a human and presumably capable of understanding human speech while in that form, he had been equally creepy.

Is this scene later revisited and resolved responsibly?

We're not personally willing to watch the remaining episodes just to find out and that's always a danger if that was their intent.

Possibly there's a scene where she points accusingly at cat boy (after learning his identity) and calls him a creep for touching sleeping orgasm boy, and he responds with right back at you, but what we've come to expect of gender double standards in entertainment would lead us to guess not.

Demand for science fiction content has boomed over the past decade and we love that, however it may have outpaced the supply of qualified writers.

Science fiction is always holding a mirror up to our own world.

You can't just write for drama, giggles etc.

Passengers, Extraordinary and also the racism we saw in Doctor Who's Flux series may be symptoms of an urgent need for all scripts to be competently, critically assessed on this dimension before filming.

Extraordinary is streaming now on Disney+.
