Doctor Strange Takings

Deadline have published a detailed analysis of how Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness fared in its opening weekend.

Raking in $185 million US, that puts it ahead of The Batman ($135 million) and behind Spider-Man: No Way Home ($260 million).

Compared to other MCU titles, it lands behind 2015's Age of Ultron with $191 million.

Their analysis is good but we had one thought they didn't.

Making TV series for Disney+ based on and interwoven with the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a logical move.

But prior to this film, anyone who had seen all of the previous Marvel films had seen all potentially related material and could regard themselves as fully prepared.

There were some very minor movie tie-ins with the network (i.e. free-to-air) Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series, but that series wasn't locked behind a subscription.

Not everyone subscribes to Disney+ and accordingly not everyone would have seen Wandavision.

The promos for Doctor Strange made it seem like Wanda's role in it flowed directly on from her series.

So it's possible that some people who have seen Marvel films in the past and might have gone to watch this one, didn't because they felt out of the proverbial loop for not having seen Wandavision.

Also some Disney+ subscribers who previously might have seen Marvel films in cinemas might now wait for it to come to the streaming service, to get maximum value out of their subscription.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is screening in cinemas now.
