Right now everyone is talking about fantasy roleplaying Souls-like Elden Ring, eg. nearing a million concurrent Steam users and being trash talked by other developers for breaking the mould and setting new standards.
It has to be tough for other developers. Games typically take five plus years to develop and releasing into a market with changed expectations and tastes is not ideal.
On the other hand, Elden Ring has and will probably continue to boost popularity of the Souls-like design which these developers created.
Their previous best was Dark Souls 3 in 2016 which achieved 129,831 concurrent Steam users. Elden Ring has 952,523.
So now might be the perfect time for a developer to announce the release date for a new Souls-like, eg. Dolmen which has with a trailer.
Set in a sci-fi universe where humanity has colonized several star systems using space travel, technology, and genetic manipulation to adapt to the conditions, Dolmen has players battling across a distant planet - Revion Prime - trying to unravel a mystery of alien species, corrupt corporations, and unknown dimensions.
Dolmen is less graphically impressive than Elden Ring and may also differ from it in other respects but will almost certainly draw more eyes to it for making this announcement now and releasing in a few months - May 20.
By which time many will have finished Elden Ring and be thirsty for something similar but new.
This trailer opens with some nice alien language voice-acted dialog, accompanied by English subtitles (which worryingly contains one or possibly two typos), and we see what looks like a player beaming down from a ship and a bit of boss combat.
Then characteristic Souls-like failure.
Souls bosses are like that. Not pushovers.
And what looks like other players beaming down to help you.
There doesn't seem to be a lot of information about the game but it will feature co-operative multiplayer.
