Dune BAFTA Wins
Posted By:

Jane Campion did quite well this weekend with her The Power of the Dog winning best film at both the Directors Guild of America Awards and the British Academy Film Awards, and her best director at the BAFTAs.

Dune missed out on best film at the DGAs but cleaned up at the BAFTAs with five wins - cinematography, original score, production design, sound and special visual effects - out of eleven nominations.

Well done to Jane.

Interestingly Dune's performance is receiving a wide range of treatment from different publications.

In the BBC article it's almost a footnote towards the very end of the list of awards. Not even deserving of an entire sentence.

Sir Kenneth Branagh's Belfast was named outstanding British film, while sci-fi saga Dune won five awards in total - best score for Hans Zimmer plus best cinematography, production design, sound and special visual effects.

Variety feature it in their title.

‘The Power of the Dog’ Wins Best Film at BAFTAs; ‘Dune’ Leads With Five Wins

And first sentence.

“Dune” was the big winner at the 2022 BAFTAs with five wins in the craft categories. Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” won the coveted best film BAFTA and best director.

Was this a sci-fi snub from the BBC or because production awards are regarded by some as less glamorous / prestigious?

Either way, well done to Dune.
