Dune China Controversy

Taiwan News reports the absense of black actress Sharon Duncan-Brewster's character and replacement with Taiwanese actor Chang Chen's character on Chinese promotional posters for Dune.

At this time it isn't known who is responsible for this difference and it should be noted that the US version of the posters have also been seen in China.

The tweet from the China Africa Project which drew attention to this has been deleted but is shown in the article and persists in wayback.

Possibly this kind of localisation of promotional content for different regions isn't new but courtesy of social media, the audience is now also global.

If both of these characters are prominent enough in the film to feature on any poster, why not show them both on all posters?

Although, that also wouldn't be entirely without risk.

Zendaya's character Chani has been featured prominently not just on posters but also trailers, but has only 7 minutes of screen time.

This has angered some critics and fans with some even describing her as a "wasted" character.

Her role in the book is later in the story so many existing Dune fans wouldn't be surprised by this but not everyone has read the book.
