Dune Leaps into Second
Posted By:

We recently reported on a rifle from the original series of Star Trek selling for US $615, 000 (US). At the time no-one - including us - realised that this was a new record for Star Trek, beating the previous record holder of an Enterprise D model which sold at a Christie's auction for $576, 000 (US) in 2006.

While that was progress for Star Trek, it didn't even come close to the current record holder for not just sci-fi but all entertainment memorabilia - Robby the Robot which sold for $5.375 million (US) in 2017. The robot appeared in a number of films and also the original Lost in Space TV series.

Another robot had held second place for sci-fi - an R2D2 used in filming Star Wars sold for US $2.76 million (US) also in 2017.

That was a good year for robots.

R2D2 has just been beaten by an item which was valued at between $28, 000 and $39, 000 US by Christies - the storyboards for the planned 1970s Dune film.

They sold for $2.66 million euros / $2.99 million (US) / $4.14 million (AU).

Christies admitted that their valuation hadn't accounted for the surge of interest in the franchise which the most recent film has clearly inspired.
