Dune Up For a DGA
Posted By:

Nominees have been announced for the 74th Directors Guild of America Awards.

Denis Villeneuve has been nominated for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film for Dune.

He's up against Paul Thomas Anderson for Licorice Pizza, Kenneth Branagh for Belfast, Jane Campion for The Power of the Dog and Steven Spielberg for West Side Story.

Spielberg is obviously known in these parts for his sci-fi films, but West Side Story ain't one of those.

He has previously been nominated for 11 DGA's and won 3 of those. None of those wins were for sci-fi.

We could only one spot one previous sci-fi winner in this category, Alfonso Cuarón for Gravity in 2013.

Interestingly, all of their TV drama director nominations this year went to episodes in the same show, HBO's Succession.

Which isn't sci-fi.

Anything else for sci-fi?

The closest we can offer is Hiro Murai's nomination for an episode of Station Eleven, which some call sci-fi. But we agree with the author and don't.

The 74th Directors Guild of America Awards will be presented on March 12.
