Dusty Old Stargate

Several weeks ago Stargate fansite GateWorld published an article about the Stargate TV series all disappearing from US streaming services.

Our focus being Australia, we thought it interesting but not immediately relevant to our audience.

Now we have an Australian connection.

A few days ago Amazon Prime announced their launch of Prime Video Channels - which essentially allow users to access other streaming services through Prime.

Not for free. You need to subscribe separately to each service.

One of those channels is MGM - owners of Stargate - for $4.99 per month.

With Amazon having struck a deal to buy MGM, Gateworld reasoned that in the US, Stargate would end up on Prime.

Here in Australia it looks like they're instead going to that separate subscription MGM channel:

The MGM streamer will become available through Prime Video Channels in Australia and provide access to TV series such as the Stargate sci-fi franchises SG-1, Atlantis and Universe, along with long-running supernatural hit Teen Wolf.

It seems unlikely that Amazon would strike this deal to stream MGM content as a separate service if they didn't intend to continue doing so after the acquisition.

In a streaming market where classic sci-fi is being progressively siphoned off to different providers, this is an additional degree of fragmentation.

Many Stargate fans would own physical copies which they could dust off.

The general public? Those who don't subscribe simply won't watch Stargate. They'll watch something else.

Australian viewers can presently watch the three Stargate TV series on Stan but that is not expected to continue.
