Early Avatar?

In what might be a major development on the gaming landscape, out of Disney's D23 Expo came an update trailer for mobile / android MMO Avatar: Reckoning.

Both this and Ubisoft's single player action roleplaying game Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora had been delayed to 2023. This trailer pegs Reckoning as "coming soon".

With the long awaited sequel film Avatar: The Way of Water splashing down in cinemas in December, not having any accompanying games for eager Avatar fans to play until 2023 would have been a huge missed opportunity.

"Coming soon" is vague but it now looks like the film will have company.

Competition for player attention, money and also time is fierce in the gaming industry.

Being a mobile game, Reckoning's design and gameplay is relatively simplistic by modern gaming standards.

But a lot of money is spent by players on free-to-play games and in that space, Reckoning looks quite sophisticated and polished.

Warner Bros. has done incredibly with its simple, 2D fighter MultiVersus.

Reckoning is a 3D world allowing players to immerse themselves in Pandora and play its story.

We're not fans of free-to-play games generally because generally they're encumbered by monstrous monetization.

But Avatar is a wonderful property and what we saw of its story intrigued us.

Less remarkable but marking a promotional wind-up, a new poster has been released marking 100 days until the sequel film's cinematic release.

Avatar: The Way of Water releases in Australian cinemas on December 15.
