Nominations for the 74th annual Emmy Awards have been announced and sci-fi is not what we'd call prominent.

Severance snagged a respectable 14 nominations and Stranger Things, 1.

• Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series - John Turturro as Irving Bailiff
• Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series - Christopher Walken as Burt Goodman
• Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series - Patricia Arquette as Harmony Cobel
• Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series - Ben Stiller for "The We We Are"
• Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series - Dan Erickson for "The We We Are"
• Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Contemporary Program (One Hour or More) - Jeremy Hindle, Nick Francone, Angelica Borrero-Fortier and Andrew Baseman for "Good News About Hell"
• Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series - Rachel Tenner and Bess Fifer
• Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Drama Series- Erica Freed Marker, and Geoffrey Richman for "In Perpetuity")
• Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Drama Series - Geoffrey Richman for "The We We Are"
• Outstanding Main Title Design - Oliver Latta and Teddy Blanks
• Outstanding Music Composition for a Series (Original Dramatic Score) - Theodore Shapiro
• Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music

Series creator Dan Erickson is pleased with the haul and also public response to the series.

Just this week we finally had an opportunity to watch and it is incredible.

Deserving of accolades.

Renewed for a second season, Dan warned that their writing process is not straightforward and they haven't set a production start date yet.

It’s not really a straight line process, and it never was with this show. [Director-EP] Ben [Stiller] is very involved with the creation of the story, which is the same as how it was in Season 1. It was always about this sort of weird alchemy of his ideas and my ideas, and filtering those through each other until we get something that we both agree feels right. So, it’s a really in-depth process, but a joyful process, and that’s what we’re doing right now.

Though only receiving a single nomination, it's the big one for Stranger Things:

• Outstanding Drama Series

Station Eleven, which its author and we don't regard as sci-fi, received 3 nominations:

• Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie - Himesh Patel as Jeevan Chaudhary
• Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie - Hiro Murai for "Wheel of Fire"
• Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie - Patrick Somerville for "Unbroken Circle"

As did What We Do in the Shadows, which we regard as supernatural rather than sci-fi, but so much fun:

• Outstanding Comedy Series
• Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series - Sarah Naftalis for "The Casino"
• Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series - Stefani Robinson for "The Wellness Center"

The 74th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards are scheduled to be presented on September 12.
