Hugos Haul

This year's Hugo Awards for science fiction and fantasy have been announced. Primarily for books they include categories for short and long form dramatic presentations.

With The Expanse winning the former for its season five finale Nemesis Games - it's second win out of five nominations - and Dune the latter.

Congratulations all around.

We were surprised by last year's long form winner being Netflix's The Old Guard, which we enjoyed but didn't regard as remarkable.

This year?

The Expanse is a mostly marvellous show and season five one of its stronger.

We'd call Dune a superb production and probably very deserving of this win, though having read the book and seen multiple film versions of it already, it was utterly unsurprising and didn't feel impactful.

Which might be why it was oft nominated but didn't win many major awards.

Co-writer and director Dennis Villeneuve is keen to make at least a trilogy though, so later films treading fresh(er) ground might pack more of an awards punch.

The Expanse is streaming now on Prime Video.

Dune recently arrived on Netflix here in Australia as heralded and has also quietly turned up on Binge, where we'd normally expect a Warner Bros. film to find a home.
