On January 24 Warner Bros issued a press release announcing that beginning early January 25 (i.e. yesterday), The Matrix Resurrections would be available digitally to rent or buy.

Just Watch list it as currently available in Australia to rent ($29.99) or buy ($34.99) from several vendors.

This follows an earlier press release in Canada on January 7 detailing digitial availability for that region beginning on the 14th, citing COVID as the reason.

TORONTO, ON – January 7, 2022 – Warner Bros. Pictures Canada announced today that “The Matrix Resurrections” will receive an accelerated Premium Home Release due to the continued varying market restrictions resulting from the pandemic. While the studio remains committed to providing moviegoers with a theatrical experience wherever possible, with fewer markets open, the decision was made to offer audiences multiple ways to enjoy the epic new chapter in the groundbreaking franchise on the big screen where available and in the comfort of their own home for ownership or rental through Premium Home Release.

While COVID may genuinely be keeping some moviegoers away from cinemas, the film currently holds a low 62% / 64% score from critics / audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

With a budget of $190 million (USD) and presently having only earned $148.5 million at the box office, it is officially a bomb. Though as did Dune, it released simultaneously in cinemas and on HBO Max in the US.

Shame. The trailers looked so good.

The range of criticisms is curious with some praising the special effects and the film already having been nominated for several awards in the category, to an IGN reviewer slamming the visuals, describing it as a "bad - and sometimes ugly - film".

IGN is a gaming site. Is it possible that her standards and expectations were higher because of the current standard of visuals in modern games? Or perhaps specifically because of the superb visuals demonstrated in The Matrix Awakens game demo?
