Back in July Marvel's Midnight Suns began dribbling out three part meet, gameplay and history videos for their extensive roster of heroes.

They've just completed the most important set of those for The Hunter - their new player designed hero. Meet, gameplay, history.

Player designed characters are common in video games but this is a first for Marvel.

In previous Marvel games playable characters have always been drawn from the existing Marvel universe.

The Hunter is a new character and the game gives them an established history which weaves into the story, but players can determine their appearance and powers.

It's a good compromise.

The Hunter's History

You're a child of Lilith, the game's primary foe.

Lilith's background has varied in the comics but Midnight Suns establishes her as an immortal sorceress who fell in love with a mortal man.

Killed by the plague.

His death caused Lilith to go dark side.

Little baby you was taken away by Lilith's sister, Caretaker, and trained to fight your mother.

You succeeded in defeating her but also died.

Fast forward to the present day, the villainous Hydra group finds Lilith's body and using a combination of science and dark magic revives and enhances her.

You are also revived.

It isn't detailed by whom but from the video and screenshot shown here it looks like your aunt and Doctor Strange.

Then it's up to you and the other Midnight Suns to take on Lilith.

The Hunter's Gameplay

Unlike other characters in the game, The Hunter has three ability branches - power, light and dark.

Each branch has 10 cards and its own legendary ability.

The power branch includes buffs, debuffs and damage.

The light branch is more support oriented with buffs, heroism generation, heals and cures.

The dark branch is damage and control oriented but comes with negative effects, which aren't detailed.

Light and dark branch progression requires making light or dark dialog choices or using light / dark abilities in combat.

Marvel's Midnight Suns is scheduled to release in early 2023 on PC, Xbox X|S and PS5, with Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PS4 versions to follow.
