Netflix K 2023

Netflix have revealed their 2023 slate of Korean film and series among which are three sci-fi titles.

JUNG_E, Black Knight and Goodbye Earth.

We've already seen a tantalising teaser and trailer for Train to Busan and Hellbound director Yeon Sang-ho's JUNG_E.

In a post-apocalyptic near-future, a researcher at an AI lab leads the effort to end a civil war by cloning the brain of a heroic soldier — her mother.

Releasing in just a few days (January 20), early reviews are just starting to hit the web. MovieWeb's Matthew Mahler was very impressed.

Then there's Black Knight.

In a dystopian 2071 devastated by air pollution, the survival of humanity depends on the Black Knights — and they’re far from your average delivery men.

Post apocalyptic sci-fi delivery men isn't breaking totally new ground.

There's Hideo Kojima's adventure / exploration game Death Stranding, with a sequel and a film also in development.

But with Black Knights we might be seeing that bloom into its own sub-genre.

Netflix's third Korean sci-fi is Goodbye Earth.

As an asteroid hurtles towards Earth with nothing to stop it, one determined teacher fights to keep her former students safe — no matter the cost.

No disrespect intended to teachers - education is a noble profession - but this synopsis conjures images of a teacher threatening an asteroid with detention.

Instructing it to write "I will not obliterate all human life" one thousand times on the blackboard.

If those are even still in use?

Maybe it's a whiteboard these days. Or an electronic tablet of some description.

We are definitely showing our age.

JUNG_E releases on January 20 on Netflix with Black Knight and Goodbye Earth following later in 2023.
