Oscar Noms Abound

The 95th Academy Award nominations have been announced and colour us tickled pink because Everything Everywhere All at Once leads with 11 nominations.

Other sci-fi nominees are Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (5), Avatar: The Way of Water (4) and The Batman (3).

We're not sure if we'd call this one sci-fi but it's quirky, locally grown and impressively titled.

An Ostrich Told Me the World Is Fake and I Think I Believe It by Brisbane stop motion filmaker Lachlan Pendragon has been nominated in the Best Animated Short Film category.

When a young telemarketer is confronted by a mysterious talking ostrich, he learns that the universe is stop motion animation. He must put aside his dwindling toaster sales and focus on convincing his colleagues of his terrifying discovery. It's scary business living in a stop motion world, where your faces come off and a giant hand controls your every move.

Though not sci-fi, again Australia's Cate Blanchett has been nominated for Best Actress (Tar), having already won that category at the Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards.

The next film we'll Cate in is the adaptation of sci-fi shooter Borderlands game in which she stars, joined by Jamie-Lee Curtis.

Jamie has received multiple Best Supporting Actress nominations for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once, and her first ever Oscar nomination.

A friend photographed her reaction to the news and Jamie posted it to Instagram.

We wouldn't be surprised to see the Borderlands film capitalise on their recent critical success in its marketing.

Note that three of the five nominees in the Best Supporting Actress category are from sci-fi films, including Angela Bassett who won in this category at the Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards.
