Sony Buy Bungie
Posted By:

Global megacorporation Sony have announced a deal to buy game developer Bungie, known for Destiny and its sequel and who made the original Halo, for $3.6 billion US.

Bungie have released a statement reassuring fans that they will retain creative freedom and in an FAQ that none of its games will become Playstation exclusives.

In addition to being yet another in a long list of major game developer acquisitions by global megacorps, Sony are in the business of making both films (eg. 2021 chart topper Spider-Man: No Way Home)  and TV series (eg. The Boys).

This deal could foreshadow announcements of one or more Destiny adaptations and that will mean more sci-fi on our screens.

The acquisition of games with large online playerbases also has potential implications for the emerging metaverse.

Online games are virtual worlds which often include virtual shops that take real money for virtual items.

They and their players are several steps closer to the metaverse and could be its easiest and first converts.
