Star Trek Politics
Posted By:

George Takei and The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine writer Robert Hewitt Wolfe have rejected a Fox claim that:

Star Trek writers take Starship Enterprise where it's never gone before - woke politics

Even our entertainment is awash in bitter partisanship

We feel that everyone may be wrong in this instance.

George argues that Star Trek has always been political and it unquestionably has, but this misses the point.

Robert offered:

Actual #StarTrek writer: “You’re a moron.”

You can quote me on that.

Google defines "woke" as:

alert to injustice in society, especially racism.

"we need to stay angry, and stay woke"

In our view there is a very vocal and counterproductive element of anger, bitterness and hate in left politics right now.

Which absolutely isn't present in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Fox having stipulated The Enterprise we take that to indicate STN.

While we were critical of STN's second episode on other fronts, both this and the preceding are true to the diplomatic and constructive ideals of classic Star Trek.

In the second episode the Enterprise is attacked by a ship with a deeply religious crew and they display no inclination to negotiate or back down.

To his own crew Pike is initially somewhat flippant about their religious ways, but by the end of the episode everyone has come to a better understanding of each other and part on good terms.

Including Pike and crew having changed their estimation of that religion.

This is the polar opposite of bitter partisanship.

We're not sure the story completely works as a parallel to present day politics and religion but this episode may in the true spirit of Star Trek have been an effort to throw water, rather than oil, on that particular fire.

Also unlike Discovery, which everyone was told we must love without question because it sports the first black female Star Trek lead, Strange New Worlds isn't promoting itself on "woke" credentials.

It is promoting itself as a return to classic Star Trek format and optimistic tone and delivers on both.
