Subnautica Dev Purchase

Unknown Worlds, developers of Subnautica and sequel Below Zero, will be acquired by Krafton.

Subnautica is a rarity in the gaming world.

While Unknown Worlds had previously made Natural Selection 1 & 2 which were typical combat games with the usual assorted weaponry, Subnautica was developed without them.

Despite ongoing pressure from some gamers to add weapons thoughout the game's early access period, the developers stuck to their guns.

They succeeded in making a fun survival game in which you can't kill your way past problems.

There are threats in the game - dangerous alien aquatic creatures - but players can either cleverly navigate around them or use various technologies to deal with them, eg. render them temporarily harmless with a stasis rifle.

It isn't completely non-violent. Fish can be killed and eaten and constitute most of the available menu. A few fruits and vegetables are also available.

Krafton's game portfolio is largely but not exclusively typical action (i.e. kill stuff) RPGs / shooters.

Their press release says that Unknown Worlds will continue as an independent studio so hopefully this means more great non-violent games.

Also included in the press release was a statement about a new "genre-defining" game to be released in early access in early 2022.
