Super Cackling

We are not the sort of person who talks to our television or computer screen but repeatedly found ourselves saying things like, "Ooh I'm into this," while watching new gameplay footage for top-down superhero action roleplaying game Superfuse.

If you're into this sort of game all fifteen minutes of gameplay will probably delight.

But we've also summarised the main takeaways with links to the juiciest moments.

What is Superfuse?

It's a Diablo-esque action roleplaying game where you're a superpowered individual fighting to save humanity from an alien threat.

More corporate thug than hero.

So it's a real twist on the genre.

That twist doesn't float our boat but there is another.

A simple but sophisticated ability modding system.

If you even slightly appreciated the spellcrafting systems in Elder Scrolls Morrowind or Oblivion, what's on offer here may melt your brain.

The Highlights

Right at the beginning they demonstrate the base abilities and you can see that there are no cooldowns.

Each ability just has an energy cost.

Early on we see clever use of the Ice Wall and Meteor abilities in combination - trapping enemies behind the wall and then dropping a meteor on them.

The Ice Wall isn't a perfect lockdown. Enemies can move around them and also wear them down with assaults.

Plus players can get the placement wrong. That's seen several times.

So this isn't a 1-2 button I-win move.

Several minutes in we see the skill tree and the player upgrading the Ice Wall to make it longer.

Then apply a mirror effect to it, which creates a pair of Ice Walls.

Any point to that?

Yes - we see them use paired Ice Walls to more effectively trap opponents used in combination with a Flame Wall in between.

Moving onto Meteor they demo ability specific options to upgrade it to summon one extra meteor, increase the radius and decrease the cast speed.

Then demo a general (i.e. applicable to any ability) modifier to split the meteor into three.

And yes, the one extra plus three split modifiers can be combined to summon six meteors.

Feeling self-conscious about talking to our computer screen, we have gagged ourselves but are thinking, "I couldn't possibly be more into this."

Nine minutes into the game, level 6 and still armed with only the same beginning base abilities, Superfuse's modification system has allowed the player to appreciably evolve their gameplay.

Without any cost or hassle to switch modifications.

Finally they demo Combust abilities modifiers turning a short range melee fire attack into a large PBAOE (point blank area of effect).

Then a triple ringed AOE (area of effect).

After that modifying the Meteor ability to a half screen multi-hitter.

Which may have elicited slight cackling.

In the comic book corner Marvel and DC both have computer games launching this year - Midnight Suns and Gotham Knights.

Tactical card games are a total yawn for us so Midnight Suns is of little interest.

We're impressed by what has been shown for Gothan Knights but Superfuse from a wholly new property and a small indie developer (Stitch Heads Entertainment) is what we're truly excited to see.

This first fifteen minutes of gameplay completely lived up to the features promised on its Steam page.

Superfuse will release on PC (Steam) but has no ETA right now.
