While we saw and shared info about the then upcoming and now live (November 3 - 21) the Sydney Film Festival (SFF), we were unaware that there's also a separate, younger (now in its second year)  Sydney Science Fiction Film Festival (SSFFF).

Running simultaneously.

That was not planned. The SFF had been scheduled to run in August but had to be delayed because of the Sydney COVID lockdown.

Partly in response to COVID and also to accomodate more content this year, the SSFFF are doing the live event in Leichhardt, Sydney from November 11 - 14 and a national online event from November 4 - 25.

Note however, that titles screening during the live event won't be available online to NSW viewers. They'd still like to see people attend the live event.

Who is the SSFFF's intended audience? Director Simon Foster says:

I’d like to pose that question to people who see the words “science fiction” and decide our festival is not for them. They hear “science fiction” and they think ray guns and spaceships and little green men. What they don’t see is a film like Moon Heart, a heartbreaking Peruvian drama about a disenfranchised old woman who imagines a Marvel-like superhero to be her personal saviour; or, Kalpavigyan, a documentary that traces 100 years of speculative storytelling in Bengali culture.

Intriguing.
