The Boys on Masculinity
Posted By:

TV Insider reports that season 3 of The Boys will be "a meditation on toxic masculinity" according to showrunner Eric Kripke.

Possibly this will inspire many cries of, "Not more woke garbage," all across the internet in the coming days.

But The Boys is all about subverting expectations and this might not be exactly as it appears.

In season 2, for example, we were introduced to Stormfront who on first appearance espoused feminist values and was rebelliously anti-Vought.

Later we learned that she was a Nazi of the highest pedigree and essentially the mother of Vought International.

Simultaneously we have The Deep, who is a creep. He sexually harassed fellow hero Starlight and that event was revisited throughout the first two seasons.

It's not the case that the show hates women or feminism but it accurately portrays that villainy can take root in or hide behind many things.

"Toxic masculinity" has its original feminist meaning of an unhealthy, socially defined mould for male thought and behaviour.

It is also thrown around as a men are inherently evil epithet.

The potential social real estate which The Boys could explore here is vast.

Regardless, the first two seasons were extremely entertaining so we have sensibly high expectations of the third.

Season 3 of The Boys will be on Amazon Prime but presently has no release date.
