TVLine has published an official no update update on The Orville's season 4 renewal status, with a quote from Craig Erwich, President, ABC Entertainment, Hulu & Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals.

While some (eg. ScreenRant) are decrying doom it's really a no news message.

We don’t have anything to share right now. It’s a great show and I know that the fans loved having it back in their lives. And Seth [MacFarlane] did a great job, uniquely as he can, in front of and behind the camera. But we don’t have anything to share right now.

In the world of television series it is odd for a series to hang in limbo as we see with The Orville right now.

How well a show performs is known fairly quickly to TV execs and if the axe is going to drop it usually happens quickly.

Claiming inside sources which we obviously can't verify, YouTuber SCI-TREK is very confident of renewal.

Saying that season 3 performed quite well but not well enough to justify the same budget for season 4 so Seth and Hulu are negotiating a smaller one.

Once that has been settled there's still the issue of when it can be written and produced because Seth is super busy with other projects right now.

So we won't hear any official word about renewal until they've settled on a budget and locked it into Seth's calendar.

Makes sense at least.
