The Other Ark
Posted By:

This year is shaping up to be huge for futuristic dinosaur survival game Ark, with updates, a sequel and an animated TV adaptation.

But there's also the other Ark, which we last heard about at the beginning of last year when Syfy gave it the thumbs up and had since forgotten. Now there's a trailer, though not a great one in our estimation.

With two Stargate connections - Dean Devlin to the film and Jonathan Glasner to the series - we had been optimistic but this trailer strikes both tween and B-grade chords.

Neither terribly appealing to our tastes but there is an audience for all of those CW B-grade genre shows.

This trailer fills in a blank from last year's synopsis:

The story is set 100 years in the future at a time when planetary colonization missions have become a necessity to secure the survival of the human race. The series follows the crew of the Ark One after they encounter a disaster on their mission with more than a year left to go before reaching their destination. They’ll grapple with a lack of life-sustaining supplies and a leadership vacuum, forcing the remaining crew to become the best versions of themselves to stay on course and stay alive.

The disaster is a collision.

Nothing remarkable about that.

Though we regard it as curious that the synopsis didn't mention that the survivors - especially those who end up in charge - are all rather on the young side.

Young main characters doesn't automatically make it a dud in our books.

The 100 is both well written and produced drama. A fabulous show.

But more often that's associated with the B-grade quality seen in this footage and we're guessing that Syfy wanted to keep that under their hat for as long as they could.

The Ark premieres in the US on Syfy on February 1 and there's no word yet on if it's coming to Australia.
