US UFO Office

In an exclusive interview with Politico, US Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand talks about her proposed amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act which would create an Anomoly Surveillance and Resolution Office.

She cites a number of good reasons why the US government should investigate unexplained aerial phenomena (UAP) - the new official term for UFOs - including regard for the mental health of military personnel.

Presently they're told not to report the unusual because everyone will think you're insane.

That's obviously not healthy.

And it would be a truly marvellous thing to wake up one morning and read that we've now officially encountered an alien species.

This proposal, which has bipartisan support, isn't the craziest thing we've read.

On the other hand, we are familiar with one of the documents mentioned in this article - the June preliminary assessment from the Director of National Intelligence and here as elsewhere, it is arguably misrepresented.

The increased attention follows a preliminary assessment from the director of national intelligence in June that reviewed more than 140 UAP incidents that could not be readily explained, including 18 that maneuvered in ways that appeared to defy known aerodynamics.

One of the obvious potential sources of UAPs is US government or corporate advanced technology, eg. drones. The report acknowledges this:

USG or Industry Developmental Programs: Some UAP observations could be attributable to developments and classified programs by U.S. entities. We were unable to confirm, however, that these systems accounted for any of the UAP reports we collected.

Inability to confirm doesn't necessarily mean that the US aren't responsible for these incidents. It could mean that they are but can't acknowledge or "confirm" them courtesy of their belonging to classified programs.

Regardless of the origin of these phenomena, if the inability to report them is causing distress then an official office might solve that.
