Waiting for News
Posted By:

This is the semi-official update status for the next Star Trek film.

In an interview with Collider, Simon Pegg was asked what he knew.

COLLIDER: Have you spoken actually to Matt (Shakman) about this next Star Trek movie? What do you know? What can you say?

PEGG: I don't know much. I've met Matt briefly and seems like a great guy. I love the work he did on WandaVision. It's always waiting with these things, because the world is an uncertain place. COVID's thrown everything into a spin. There's so many factors that have to align in order for these things to happen. I'm just quietly waiting for news basically. And I texted J.J. the other day and said, "Tell me what's happening." He's just like, "We're waiting for news."

Maybe Matt is a great guy but we weren't impressed by Wandavision so don't have the greatest of expectations for this one.

And this film has been in development since 2015. Long before COVID was on the scene.

As one of the primary cast and essentially a spokesperson for the studio we wouldn't expect Simon to be brutally honest but we can be.

The Star Trek franchise is vulnerable right now.

Discovery is not loved by many fans. Same for Picard.

The recent films have been financially successful but again, not loved by many Trekkies both for being more blockbuster action films than Star Trek in tone and also for being a reboot which erases 55 beloved years of Star Trek history.

Paramount, who have also undergone leadership changes in the interim, are probably wisely exercising great caution with this film.

The currently untitled next Star Trek film has an official ETA of December 22, 2023.
