Wandering Earth 2

A teaser has been released for the prequel to The Wandering Earth which is China's highest grossing sci-fi film.

Interestingly the trailer includes embedded English subtitles so they're pitching this at a global audience.

The premise is a bit out there - with our sun expected to expand, big honking rockets are built across the Earth and the plan is to move it.

Our head hurts slightly at the believability of that notion but in the film it's not like life continues as normal on the Earth's surface.

Everyone has to live underground.

And the film is quite good.

Is there a pro China undertone?

Yes. That's there.

But the film doesn't advocate any specific politics.

It's just that their Chinese government is benevolent.

As a piece of science-fiction we can roll with that.

The prequel takes viewers back to the point of deciding to build those big honking rockets.

Not sure that has the same sci-fi spectacle potential as the original.

This teaser gives the impression of it being a disaster / halls of power government response film.

It will premiere on January 22 in China.

We can't find any information about its Australian release but it will doubtless make its way down under eventually.

The Wandering Earth (original) is streaming now on Netflix.
