New Netflix Comics Series
Posted By:

Hollywood Reporter has shared details of a new TV series deal having been struck with Netflix.

The property is a comic book by the name of Nocterra.

Ten years after the world is plunged into an everlasting night that turns all living creatures into monstrous shades, the only way to survive is to stay close to artificial light. Enter Valentina “Val” Riggs, a skilled ferryman who transports people and goods along deadly unlit roads with her heavily illuminated eighteen wheeler.

Who is Val?

Val has been orphaned twice. Her earliest memories are of an orphanage in China; legally blind as a child, slowly watching the edges of her world turn dark. Eventually, a couple adopts her and brings her to America to receive corrective surgery. Her adopted parents didn’t survive the “event,” and years later, she and her brother Emory are making due at one of the last remaining lit outputs with a thriving human population.

Monsters in the dark and an orphan lass with good lighting sounds reminiscent of Netflix fantasy series Shadow and Bone, based on a book by the same name. But a completely unique premise isn't easy or everything.

One arguably unique thing about this one is its age.

Nocterra isn't even one year old. The first comic released on March 3 this year.

Compared to the likes of a Marvel comic, it might not bring with it a large and established fan base.

On the plus side, it's a modern work already written with modern sensibilities and standards.

The comics were also crowdfunded through Kickstarter. With a $40k goal which they achieved on their first day and reaching $200K by its end they raised enough to cover 8 issues. And now a Netflix series in the works.
