Evil Cancelled

Netflix have cancelled Resident Evil.

We are neither surprised nor disappointed and went so far as to say we'd cancel this show without hesitation.

It's far from the worst thing we've seen or that's streaming on Netflix.

But even putting aside budget considerations - this was a big budget production - as a major brand title, subscribers will judge the value of their subscription by series like this.

Sadly it was a stinker.

It drew a big crowd though and we think that's a testament not only to the strength of the Resident Evil brand but also the show's concept.

Neither diversity nor "toxic fans" sank this series.

Sub-par execution did.

Meanwhile on the undead film front, the brilliantly made but depressingly backwards in terms of gender representation Day Shift enjoyed a strong second week with 63.4 million hours viewed, up from 56.5 in its first week.

That's more than half way to breaking into Netflix's all time top 10.

We'd expect third and fourth week viewing numbers for most films to dip so it might not make it that far but right now it's probably looking like a success to Netflix execs.

More content in this franchise could be on the cards.

A big bonus from Netflix's perspective would be that they wouldn't need to pay expensive license fees for an established brand or have to worry about competing with other streaming services to renew those licences upon expiry.

Resident Evil's first and only series is streaming now on Netflix.

That's also where you'll find Day Shift.
