Next month new sci-fi horror anime series Exception will join Netflix.

Is its trailer exceptional? We're getting more of a mixed but possibly above average vibe.

Synopsis:

In the far future, humanity has been driven from Earth and forced to move its population to another galaxy. Members of a scouting team are sent to search for a planet suitable for terraforming. The crew is created through a biological 3D printer, but a system malfunction causes one of the crew members, Lewis, to emerge in a deformed state. As Lewis turns on his fellow crew members Nina, Mack, Patty and Oscar, a countdown to the end of the mission begins in the frightening darkness of the ship.

Ok.

Art style looks good.

Dialog mostly fine but a few odd lines.

No matter where you go, bombs have the same effect.

We want to say"duh" but wonder if this is either a mistranslation or makes sense in context.

That failed misprint went berserk and he's going to kill us with him!

The "mis" in "misprint" already indicates failure.

Like many anime titles precedin it, Exception will explore big existential questions like what is self, humanity etc.?

Fair enough and the story's premise sounds ripe for that exploration, but it's laid on very thick in this trailer.

Referencing what is probably still one of the best examples of a fictional work to swim in these waters, the 1995 anime Ghost in the Shell - not the 2017 live-action version - those questions aren't explored so much as they are raised.

Organically emerging from the engrossing action / political / spy drama and leaving the viewer to ponder.

Devoting half of its trailer to these questions, it seems like Exception will be less subtle.

Though twenty-seven years later, these questions might be more imminent.

It is conceivable that some of the technologies employed in this series could be a reality in the not too distant future.

Within the lifetimes of some viewers.

Do we get any sense of the meaning behind its title?

Every life is precious.

There are no exceptions.

Dark.

Does that aphorism need an exception in this instance?

If the 3D printing error is an uncontainable threat - which would seem very unlikely - then its termination would be about saving the most lives.

Not a judgement of the worth of each individual life.

Exception releases on Netflix on October 13.
