We have the year's first sci-fi cancellation - Netflix's 1899 series.

Interestingly this comes a week before Critics Choice winners are announced, with this series having been nominated in the Best Foreign Language series category.

Variety notes that the news comes direct from showrunners and Netflix have not offered comment.

Our having been made aware that despite period title and appearances, it is actually science-fiction, we had added this one to our to-watch list.

The boss asked us about it recently and we told them we'd watched a few minutes, but would wait a little while to see if Netflix cancelled first, in which case we could skip it.

And there it is.

1899 is streaming now on Netflix.
