Extraordinary v OK
Posted By:

Coming to Disney+ very soon is a new sitcom / comedy drama titled Extraordinary, a series which takes our world and gives absolutely everyone a superpower - except the main character.

By way of promotion they've released a trailer and a first look. Do they live up to the promise of the title? We're uncertain.

Its creator Emma Moran is a young screenwriting graduate who developed the show while completing her Masters and describes it as:

... somewhere in between a sitcom and a comedy drama. It’s a slight skewer of the glut of superhero films and TV around at the moment, but at its core, it’s about being lost and messy in your mid-20s. It’s a little autobiographical! Many stories focus on being exceptional, but this is more of a celebration of being just OK.

Sound idea. How about execution?

The trailer is at least ok.

Doesn't make us roll around on the floor laughing but we can see potential.

Their later released first look takes one clip from the trailer and gives us the whole scene.

Feels extraordinarily middling.

The initial mix up is slightly amusing, but eating too spicy food is one of the most over-used gags of all time.

Following it is another over-used gag - embarrassing convenience store encounter.

We don't go around chugging milk (to treat spicy food mouth or otherwise) in supermarkets but do these circumstances warrant the main character's embarrassment?

She casually catalogues the contents of his basket which includes condoms.

All she's doing is drinking milk.

Ok, he's attractive and we'd guess she might be into him but unless he's vegan this one feels tired and pointless.

On the other hand one of Disney's Strange World teasers fell flat and utterly failed to impress as a promo, but that scene in context was fine in the film.

So this could just be a marketing fail.

We might give this one a chance.

Extraordinary premieres on Disney+ on January 25.
