Davies on Diversity

In a recent interview with GQ, returning Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies touched on diversity in a manner which while true we suspected might be unwise given the broader sci-fi landscape.

By itself possibly not worth commenting on except that this morning we saw numerous sites reporting Davies expressing a very different and also uncharacteristic view about diversity - "lambasting" it.

Handsome But Not Huge

Our title refers to the budget for the next series of Doctor Who, which in November UK entertainment magazine Broadcast estimated could be in the region of 10 million pounds per episode, up from 1-3, but Russell T. Davies has now debunked:

If that was the budget, I’d be speaking to you from my base on the Moon.

Doctor Who Viewership

For much of their history, Radio Times were owned by the BBC and unsurprisingly tend never to speak ill of Doctor Who.

When discussing the recently revealed viewing numbers for Jodie Whittaker's final episode (spoilers ahead), again they don't speak ill of that or the Chibnall era, but do throw in a few extra numbers to show that the final episode only had half as many viewers (5.3 million) as his first (10.9 million).

Russell's Great Machine

Still keeping an ear to the ground for the source of speculation that David Tennant's Doctor Who might regenerate into Ncuti Gatwa's, we found a video of his appearance at Fan Expo Boston in which he says that there was closed set filming and more to his appearance than anyone realises.

Farewell Grandad

Bernard Cribbins who played Donna Noble's grandfather Wilfred Mott in Doctor Who has passed away.

Just recently he had been seen on set filming for Doctor Who's 60th anniversary special with David Tennant and Catherine Tate.

One Shirt to Rule Them All

Earlier in the week we saw stories circulating about Ryan Gosling wearing a Ncuti Gatwa Doctor Who t-shirt on a film set. While the shirt looked cool it didn't meet our threshold for news.

But has become so courtesy of that shirt, which isn't licensed merchandise and was initially removed from sale at the insistence of the BBC, returning for sale.

Russell Teases Again

We nicknamed him Russell Tease Davies following his revelation that he planted false leads to keep secret the identity of our next Doctor Who, now known to be Ncuti Gatwa of Sex Education fame, and now he might be at it again.

Dastardly Doogie

Neil Patrick Harris of Doogie Howser, M. D. and other fame has joined the cast of Doctor Who for its 60th anniversary season.

Showrunner Russell T Davies said with the announcement:

Russell Tease Davies

Returning showrunner Russell T. Davies confirmed that he planted "a couple of misleading things" about the identity of the actor who will next play Doctor Who.

We now know that our next Doctor Who will be played by Ncuti Gatwa of Sex Education fame and this is being framed explicitly as not a diversity hire.

The New Who

At the very tail end of a quiet-as-a-mouse sci-fi news week, when everyone else took a break to avoid competing with juggernauts Star Wars and Marvel, the BBC have revealed our next Doctor Who.

The role will pass from Jodie Whittaker - who we feel performed brilliantly even if the show itself took a few wrong turns - to Rwandan born Scottish actor Ncuti Gatwa, best known as Eric Effiong in Netflix's Sex Education.
