Marvel Malaise

Victoria Alonso, president of Marvel physical production, post-production, visual effects and animation has been fired amidst allegations of toxic workplace behaviour and a flagging film flagship.

Marvel became an entertainment giant by thumbing their nose at the industry norm of spitting out garbage sequels to great films, and endless reboots. Beginning with Iron Man in 2008 they made a series of marvellous movies.

Creepy Disney

We finally got around to watching an episode of Disney's not-a-superhero comedy Extraordinary, and while it is better than some of its promos made it appear, it was unexpectedly morally questionable.

For our tastes there's too much sex, but we don't regard sex as amoral. The problem is their treatment of consent. Spoilers ahead.

Roses for Ed

NASA have paid a small tribute to one of our favourite shows, The Orville, by using several character names and a fictional off world medical school in an example table in an official document.

ROSES - Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences - 2023. It's not quite as interesting as a talking flower voiced by Bruce Willis but Seth and the rest of The Orville gang are probably pleased.

Star Wars Sued

Former Star Wars: The Acolyte producer Karyn McCarthy is suing Lucasfilm for breach of contract.

Having last year accepted their offer while also being actively courted by Apple for their series Sugar, she says she commenced work and was terminated two weeks later.

Star Wars Scrapped

According to Variety, inside sources tell them that both the Patty Jenkins Rogue Squadron and the untitled Kevin Feige Star Wars films have been scrapped.

Taika Waititi's film has survived the culling but it won't be known whether his or some other project is now head of the movie line until this year's Star Wars celebration in April when plans will be officially unveiled.

The Marvels Delayed

Without giving any reason - just a new poster - Marvel has delayed The Marvels, the film from July to November. In the US the 10th but an Australian date hasn't been announced yet.

Also only in the US at this point, Disney's Haunted Mansion film has been brought forward from August to fill the July slot.

New Guardians Trailer

Another week, another Marvel blockbuster. Well not quite but this week we have both Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania hitting cinemas and a new trailer for the next in line, Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3.

If you've seen the previous two films it's about what you'd expect. Though the final gag almost made us gag.

Extraordinary Renewal

Slightly preceding their January first season premiere, Disney renewed superhero-envy comedy series Extraordinary and they've now commenced shooting season two.

Despite our title pre screening renewals actually aren't uncommon but in this case their confidence bumps us off the fence.

Davies on Diversity

In a recent interview with GQ, returning Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies touched on diversity in a manner which while true we suspected might be unwise given the broader sci-fi landscape.

By itself possibly not worth commenting on except that this morning we saw numerous sites reporting Davies expressing a very different and also uncharacteristic view about diversity - "lambasting" it.

The Orville No News

TVLine has published an official no update update on The Orville's season 4 renewal status, with a quote from Craig Erwich, President, ABC Entertainment, Hulu & Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals.

While some (eg. ScreenRant) are decrying doom it's really a no news message.
