Geophysics Specialist

Warrant Officer (WWOF) Leandro Hogan is a Geophysics Specialist and is a member of the science branch.

Role

A specialist in planetary sciences, Warrant Officer Hogan is responsible for the study of geology and climatology. The potential exploration of new planetary systems means little without the means to understand their native ecology and climates. Hogan brings his years of expertise in the planetary sciences to ISDC’s exploratory mission.

Though the discovery of new worlds capable of supporting human life remains elusive until deep-space missions can begin, evidence of extra-terrestrial intelligence suggests worlds supporting other forms of intelligent life may be much closer than previously believed. Hogan works with the ISDC team to identify and catalogue evidence of such worlds, investigating and speculating upon the geophysical conditions on those planets, and the effect such conditions may have on societies those planets may support.

Career

Born in the Brazilian city of Curitiba, Leandro Hogan graduated the University of Sao Paulo with advanced degrees in geology and environmental sciences. He has spent the past eight years with energy and natural resource companies operating in Brazil, including five years as a geologist based in Belo Horizonte, and three studying the effects of oil and natural gas extraction in the Amazon rainforest. It is this intimate understanding of the effects of development on untamed environments that caught the attention of ISDC.

Like most warrant officers within ISDC, Hogan comes to the organisation without a military background. His skills and experience facilitated direct entry to the ISDC at the rank of Warrant Officer (WWOF).

Becoming a Geophysics Specialist

Interested in Leandro’s role as an Geophysics Specialist?

To take on a similar role yourself, you’ll need to have a background in applicable planetary sciences. If selected, you’ll undertake common training and on completion will join the science branch, taking a warrant officer rank that represents your experience and seniority.

If you want to serve aboard in deep space, you'll also need to complete your qualification aboard. This is a course of training and supervised practical experience gained during a number of training cruises, completed in parallel with your geophysics work.
