Vulcan Isn't Real

Apparently it's news that home of our favourite pointy eared master of logic Spock, Vulcan, isn't real.

We never imagined it was but a recently published paper concludes that a previously reported possible Vulcan like planet in that system was a false positive.

Do Look Up

This evening a green comet will be visible two moon widths from Mars from our perspective but over 100 times further away than the moon.

Comet 2022 E3 (ZTF) is a rare event and probably worth stepping outside and taking a quick look up - if you've a telescope or binoculars - ideally after sunset but before moonrise.

New Exoplanet

NASA's James Webb infrared space telescope has confirmed its first exoplanet, i.e. a planet outside of our solar system.

LHS 475 b is an Earth sized terrestrial planet, several hundred degrees hotter than Earth orbiting closer to its star than any planet in our system.

Touching the Stars

NASA have reported a major achievement. Their Parker solar probe has flown through the sun's upper atmosphere and sampled particles and magnetic fields.

They've released a short and fascinating 5 minute video about the project and what we've already learned from it.

Hubble Bubble Toil & Trouble

NASA have published a new image from the Hubble Space Telescipe showing a 250 light-year wide bubble inside a nebula.

They have a few ideas about what might have caused it but none which completely add up according to our present understanding of giant space explosions.

Planet Outside our Galaxy

NASA may have discovered  the first evidence of a planet outside of the the Milky Way.

In the Messier 51 (M51) Whirlpool Galaxy.

It's an exciting discovery but more data is required to confirm the planet candidate's location and the method use here may not be viable again for another 70 years because of its wide orbit.

New Class Stellar Object

An international student at The University of Sydney has lead author published an article which describes what may be a new class of stellar object with peculiar characteristics.

Its light oscillates in one direction and that direction rotates over time.

Its brightness varies dramatically and its signal switches on and off with no discernible pattern or cause.

Hitchhiker's Guide Tribute

The European Southern Observatory released images of 42 of the largest asteroids in our solar system, on the 42nd anniversary of the publication of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Its numerical press release ID is 2114.

Also published on the same day was an associated article in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Galactic Attraction

In the categories of things which can you make feel small and something cool you don't see every day, we have this image from NASA's Hubble Telescope of two galaxies interacting with the collective designation of Arp 91.

Astronomers believe that such interactions will eventually result in the formation of an elliptical galaxy over a period of hundreds of millions of years.

Precious Asteroids

cnet reports that scientists have calculated the likely precious metal content of an asteroid in Earth's vicinity to be $11.65 trillion (US).

It may contain more metal than all of Earth's current reserves.

This puts the billions of dollars being poured into commercial space development into perspective.
