In classic sci-fi, the leadership (in whatever form it takes) always seems to have the answer right when its needed. Of course they do… it’s all in their script.
In immersive sci-fi there is no script, so while Endeavour’s senior crew is expected to make a timely decision, they’re not expected to have all the answers. That’s what the crew is for.
The model is closer to the space program’s Mission Control, where the controllers sitting at the consoles in the big room each represent the apex of a large team of engineers and experts who provide analysis, advice and solutions. The controllers use that flow of information to decide a course of action they can propose to the flight director.
Endeavour’s leadership team will rely on the virtual crew in the same way.
Join the Action
Not only can you watch the action live as it’s happening, as virtual crew you’ll have full access to actual vessel consoles so that you can monitor systems and adjust control settings to test your solution ideas.
What you discover or develop will be delivered directly into the action so your crewmates can assess and recommend your contribution. If you spotted something first or solved a problem better then you’ll see it unfold onscreen and career-advancing credit will be coming your way.
Enjoy enough success like that and you’ll be soon be stepping onto the bridge to join the onscreen crew.
Competitive Collaboration
The safety of the vessel and the success of the mission is the crew’s highest priority and everyone collaborates towards that end. But even within a collaborative environment, being the first to spot a problem or come up with a solution will get you the attention of those who can advance your career.
Sometimes being first isn’t always best. Spotting the flaws in a solution already proposed, suggesting ways to make it more effective or even just supporting another’s solution allows you to claim some of the credit for yourself. But if a proposed solution fails then the whole team loses credit.
So while it is in everyone’s interest to contribute individually, you should make sure you end up backing the right solution!
