The Marvels returns to cinemas next week with all-female leads and the youngest director ever to helm an MCU film.

Captain Marvel gets unexpected help from Ms Marvel when their powers become entangled after an encounter with Kree warrior Dar-Benn, played by Zawe Ashton. Each time one of the Marvels use their powers they swap places, forcing them to team up to do battle with Dar-Benn.

This entanglement was teased at the very end of the Ms Marvel TV series so at least the movie provides an explanation for that surprising finale. Iman Vellani is back as Kamahla Khan (Ms Marvel) for the movie and Brie Larson reprises her role as Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel). They’re joined by Monica Rambeau, played by Teyonah Parris.

Disney has taken a gamble on sticking to the scheduled release date despite the ongoing actors strike in the US, which prevents stars from promoting their movies. The November 2 release of Dune 2 was delayed by Warner Bros for this reason.

The Marvels hits cinemas November 9.
