Ion Sci-Fi keeps an eye on sci-fi entertainment and anything related, with news, views and reviews every week
We’re back for 2023! This week a look ahead to Foundation S2, Dead Space is the year’s first triple-A sci-fi game, new superpower dramedy Extraordinary, NASA’s James Webb telescope bags its first exoplanet, big new sci-fi out of Asia and cancellation carnage for sci-fi over the holidays.
While we got the Redfall release date (May 2) with Microsoft's Developer_Direct today which many were hoping for, the bigger news was an entirely new game called Hi-Fi Rush.
Releasing today.
What had previously been Steam's second most wishlisted game, open world zombie apocalypse multiplayer shooter The Day Before, has delayed its launch from March 1 to November 10.
Why? Steam had delisted their game following receipt of a trademark dispute claim.
The majestically named developers at Mad Head Games have produced a making of video for their upcoming third-person adventure shooter Scars Above.
This one caught our eye during last year's Gamescom and last month they released a gameplay trailer.
The 95th Academy Award nominations have been announced and colour us tickled pink because Everything Everywhere All at Once leads with 11 nominations.
Other sci-fi nominees are Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (5), Avatar: The Way of Water (4) and The Batman (3).
Developer Thunderful have released a trailer and a developer diary for their next game set in the genre diverse post-apocalyptic steampunk SteamWorld series.
This one titled SteamWorld Build will focus on construction and management but also resource gathering in a more involved manner than other titles of that style.
This one contains spoilers. If you haven't watched the second episode of The Last of Us, maybe go do that first.
Said episode includes a moment which struck us as super gross and is unsurprisingly being hailed a worst (as in most disgusting) ever.
James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water has just become the sixth film to ever cross the $2 billion (US) mark in global ticket sales.
Three out of those six films are his (Titanic, Avatar 1 and 2) and Avatar is expected to make it to fourth place within a week.
Netflix have had great success with Korean series and films among international audiences. Their recently release JUNG_E though being bizarrely trashed by some reviewers is truly brilliant and we hope it does well.
One series which performed very well in Asia but not more broadly is Crash Landing on You, a romantic drama about a South Korean heiress who accidentally paraglides into North Korea and ends up falling in love with a North Korean officer.
Upcoming third person thriller Fort Solis set in a mining outpost on Mars has been given a Q2 release date.
Interestingly their announcement describes it as an "immersive narrative thriller for the Netflix Generation".
