Studio Lionsgate has dropped a first look at the star-studded movie adaptation of video game franchise Borderlands.

Director Eli Roth has brought the vivid aesthetic of the game to life along with the rag-tag group of treasure hunters familiar to players.

Cate Blanchett looks like she’s having a ball playing lead adventurer Lillith, joined by Kevin Hart as the mercenary Roland and Jamie Lee Curtis as eccentric scientist Tannis (an NPC in the games). Jack Black voices comic-relief robot Claptrap.

They’re out to locate a mythical treasure vault on Pandora, Lillith’s home planet, but the treasure she’s actually seeking is a missing girl who may be the key to unimaginable power – it’s just not clear whether she’s let the rest of the group in on that little detail.

Early reaction to the trailer has drawn comparisons to the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, perhaps inevitable given the similar mashup of irreverent characters, a shady corner of the galaxy and comedy.

Borderlands is due in cinemas August 9.
