Lifetime Award for Okudas

If you've ever watched any sci-fi made in the past several decades, and also watched the credits roll, you might recognise the names "Michael Okuda" and "Denise Okuda".

They have both worked extensively as scenic artists in sci-fi and especially in Star Trek. Michael has earned more Star Trek screen credits than anyone except for its creator, Gene Roddenberry.

Their contributions are being recognised with Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Art Directors Guild.

The roots of Graphic Design for Film and TV can be easily traced back to Michael and Denise Okuda and their work on the Star Trek franchise. Through graphic design, the Okudas added a unique visual language to sets, whether it was through props, signage or their graphical user interface for playback (also known as Okudagrams). Additionally, their work on Star Trek led to “real-world” graphic design opportunities and lending their artistic talents to NASA’s various space programs.

Congratulations and thanks to them both.

The 26th Art Directors Guild Awards will be presented on March 25, 2022.
