Ncuti Gatwa’s first season as Doctor Who hasn’t even hit screens and already there’s news of a cast shakeup for his second season. It looks like companion Ruby Sunday will step away from the TARDIS for good after season one, according to the Sci-Fi & Fantasy Gazette.

Actress Mille Gibson’s character will be replaced by a new companion to be played by Andor’s Varada Seethu.

While no official announcement has been made, shooting for the next season is already underway and Seethu has been spotted on set in her new role.

Ruby Sunday’s single season as the Doctor’s companion is not unusual, with Bill Potts and Catherine Tate’s character Donna Noble only serving one season each in the TARDIS. Returning showrunner Russell T Davies is said to prefer updating the supporting cast each season, although other companions such as Rose Tyler, Amy Pond and Clara Oswald stuck around for multiple seasons – and even multiple Doctors.

Season fourteen of Doctor Who will be available outside the UK on Disney+ in May.
