The Sydney Science Fiction Film Festival gets underway next week.

The festival, which began in Sydney four years ago, have evolved into a national celebration of speculative cinema with screenings in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.

This year feature’s 19 features and 33 shorts, ranging from opening night’s futuristic rom-com Molli and Max in the Future through to VHS-era classics like The Last Starfighter.

There 32 Australian premieres in this year’s festival across a truly international selection including Turkey’s Once Upon a Time in the Future, Japan’s Distant Thunder and Brazil’s Forbidden World.

The Festival is hosted at Event Cinemas in Sydney at the Macquarie Centre and in Brisbane at the Myer Centre from August 23-27, and in Melbourne at Cinema Nova August 31-3 September.
