Something that's come to our attention we’d previously overlooked is eco-thriller series The Swarm.

Based on the book of the same name by German author Frank Schatzing, the first couple of episodes feature a series of bizarre incidents involving marine creatures becoming inexplicably homicidal.

This sets a diverse range of scientists on a converging path towards the truth - an unknown swarm intelligence that lives in the depths and has begun using sea life to attack humanity. The trailer hints at an alien origin and that this is the beginning of an invasion but you'll need to wait to find out, with reviews suggesting the storyline is a slow burn even while the action comes thick and fast.

While produced in English an international cast plays scientists from around the world, speaking their own language on screen which is then subtitled, giving the feel of a truly global scope.

Showrunner Frank Doelger brings serious sci-fi/fantasy credentials to the series from his work as EP on Game of Thrones.

The Swarm released on various networks around the world in March and is available in Australia on Binge.
