Spider Man Trailer

Sony have released the official trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

In it we see Peter and MCU's Dr Strange performing a magic spell which goes a bit wobbly and results in folk from alternate timelines popping in for a visit.

Namely enemies from previous Spider-Man films, like Otto Octavius, played by the original actor.

So it looks like Marvel is spinning a web around all of the disparate reboots and saying, "Mulitverse, voila!!!"

While we appreciate Marvel making some effort to tidy up the place, the Multiverse is an inherently prickly beast.

A big part of the appeal of the MCU and their films is that it's one ongoing fictional world.

The multiverse / alternate realities or dimensions can be employed to good effect to show a "what if" some event had unfolded differently and look at how known characters become different people etc.

But it's a storytelling device typically employed sparingly in science fiction properties in part because it takes a certain amount of effort to care about any fictional world.

Once you start exploding that world out into including alternates, that property both becomes more high maintenance and also potentially less impactful.

Does it matter what the outcome is of any given movie is, if you know that in alternate dimensions, it worked out a hundred different ways?

Still, the recent Spider-Man films have been very good and this one should also be fun.

Spider-Man: No Way Home releases in Australian cinemas on December 16.
